Until the walls were demolished, the space currently occupied by the square was an esplanade on the outskirts of the city located just in front of one of the main gates, from which roads led to the surrounding towns. This made the place the ideal location for open-air markets, and made it an important point of city life.
The first stage of urbanization (two large cross-shaped roads and a circular plaza at their intersection) began in 1902. The second stage began on the occasion of the 1929 International Exposition: the first project, from 1923, was by Josep Puig i Cadafalch, but it was paralyzed by the works of the metro between 1924-1926 and definitively with the establishment of the dictatorship of Primo de Rivera; was replaced by Francesc Nebot, who developed a project virtually identical to Puig's, replacing the obelisk planned by the modernist architect by a colonnade with a pavilion that finally was not completed, which is why Nebot resigned, being replaced by Joaquim Llansó, Josep Cabestany and Nicolás María Rubió Tudurí. The square was inaugurated by Alfonso XIII on November 2, 1927.

El personal fue muy amable, nos subieron de categoría a la llegada, la habitación era super espaciosa, cama enorme y muy cómoda, la ducha del baño era increíble, excelente ubicación a poca distancia de la mayoría de las atracciones, sin duda recomendaría este hotel.
No se puede pedir nada mejor en cuanto a ubicación: el hotel está a pocos pasos de Plaça De Catalunya, que es un excelente punto de partida para explorar la ciudad. El personal es servicial y super amable.

Habitaciones muy limpias y bien equipadas. Nos gustó sentarnos en el balcón para observar a la gente. El personal era amable y servicial
De principio a fin, nuestra estancia fue cumplir con el personal increíble siempre comprobando en nosotros y cómo iban las cosas. También al final de días increíbles de caminar por la ciudad y comer comida increíble, que era agradable para sumergirse en la piscina personal agradable y fresco que teníamos. ¡Sí a hacer esto de nuevo!
El Catalonia Plaza Catalunya es precioso y tuvimos una estancia muy agradable. La ubicación es perfecta, el hotel es precioso, el personal es amable y servicial, y el desayuno era fresco y abundante. Definitivamente me alojaré aquí de nuevo cuando esté en Barcelona.
